You have entered Zululand, the home of the amaZulu, the people of heaven. Zululand
is a world of fascinating contrasts and incredible beauty, a unique experience...
Discover it yourself!
From the Seven Kings who lie buried in the South, to the Big Five in the North,
the Zululand District surprises with its diversity and down to earth hospitality.
It is aptly branded the Heart of the Zulu kingdom, this place where many
clans and tribes came together hundreds of years ago to be molded into a great
nation. But the Heart of the Zulu Kingdom is more than just a place.lt is a vital
part of the nation, and the visitor to Zululand can feel its powerful presence in
the people's immense pride in their own heritage and culture.
So the visitor who wants to understand Zululand must take journeys to
both the place and its spirit. Both Journeys are breathtaking one through this magnificent
country, with its wealth of natural beauty and teeming wildlife, and the other into
the minds and culture of its people. You will be invited into the homes of the village
people to learn of their traditions and beliefs, of the important part still played
by the spirits of ancestors in their everyday lives
Your understanding of the people will also be broadened by a visit to the occult
Cultural Museum in Ondini. It has one of the finest collections of Zulu Cultural
artifact. A visit to the Emakhosini Cultural Heritage Park is another essential
stop in the journey to understanding the spirit of the Zulu people.
You should also go to battlefields where thousands of Zulu warriors fought
and died, and earned their reputation as a nation of fearsome fighters. The battlefields
have their monuments, but many people of the nation believe them to be empty places,
for the families of the dead have long since come to claim their spirits and - with
touching ceremony - take them home.
The Zulus also have many ceremonies for the living and one of the most impressive
is the Royal Reed Dance Festival held in eNyokeni Royal Residence near Nongoma,
each year. The festival is attended by more 25000 maidens from all parts of the
kingdom - and beyond - who gather to celebrate their virginity and their approaching
womanhood.
Ceremonies like this are all impressive sight and, like many of Zululand's spectacles,
will not be easily forgotten.
The kind of experience you can expect in Zululand Includes evenings around the
campfire listening to stories which will have you spellbound, enjoying sundowners
aboard a house boat on Lake Jozini with hippo all around, seeing the big Five at
game reserves set against mountains and lakes, staying over at luxury game lodges,
visiting Royal palaces, rural markets and enjoying German architecture and hospitality.
